On Friday 24 July 2026, Sandwell Advocacy set off bright and early for an exciting day trip to Barry Island Pleasure Park and Beach in Wales. The trip was made possible by the support of a micro grant offered by SVCO and brought together 26 participants. Children and young people aged 6 to 17 years, their families, staff and volunteers joined together to enjoy a memorable day of fun, learning, and connection.
The trip was carefully planned to provide an enjoyable recreational experience while encouraging family engagement, promoting wellbeing, and creating opportunities for social interaction in a safe and supportive environment. Throughout the day, those attending had the opportunity to build new friendships, strengthen existing relationships, and create lasting memories together.
Activities and Engagement
To ensure the journey was enjoyable and interactive, a variety of age-appropriate activities were organised for participants throughout the day. During the coach journey, electronic quizzes were played, encouraging everyone to get involved. The quizzes promoted teamwork, friendly competition, and social interaction among children, young people, and their families, helping to create a positive and exciting atmosphere from the very start of the trip.
Reflective Journals
Older children and young people were provided with reflective journals to record their thoughts, feelings, and experiences throughout the day. This activity encouraged self-reflection and provided a creative way for young people to record memorable moments, achievements, and highlights from the day while expressing their thoughts and feelings.
Beach Discovery Activity
Younger children took part in a beach discovery activity, where they were given collection jars and encouraged to explore the shoreline. They collected natural items such as shells, seaweed, and other treasures found along the beach.
This hands-on activity promoted curiosity, exploration, and a greater appreciation of the coastal environment. It also provided children with an opportunity to engage with nature, develop observational skills, and enjoy the sensory experience of being at the beach.
A Memorable Day for Everyone
The day trip to Barry Island Pleasure Park and Beach was a great success, providing participants with a fun-filled day of adventure, relaxation, and social connection. Children, young people, families, staff, and volunteers all enjoyed the opportunity to spend quality time together in a welcoming and supportive setting.
The trip successfully met its aims of promoting wellbeing, encouraging family participation, and creating positive shared experiences that will be remembered long after the day was over.
